Differences between sizes and volumes

  • Cremation jewelry - is a unique way to memorialize a loved one who has passed away. These unique accessories allow you to carry a particle of the deceased always with you, creating a beautiful combination of elegance and emotional value. This jewelry can contain a small amount of ashes, hair or other memento, making each piece unique.
  • large urns for adults - sometimes a standard cremation urn is not enough to accommodate the ashes of a loved one. Extra large cremation urns capacity suitable for someone who was tall or of larger stature.
  • Adult urns - typically hold around 3.0-3.6 litres, enough for a woman who weighed up to 100kg before cremation.
  • Smaller urns - are chosen for various reasons, such as the desire to divide the ashes among family members, or to keep a memento in a place particularly close to the heart or a special place of remembrance. They can also be intended for deceased infants and children.
  • reliquaries and t-light memorial urns - are simply smaller versions of standard urns. These are unique items that serve to subtly store the ashes of loved ones, providing them with a dignified place of remembrance.

Why does urn size matter?

  • Capacity: The size of the urn directly affects its capacity, which is crucial when choosing a cremation urn.
  • Individual Preferences: Some people prefer smaller, discreet urns, while others choose larger, more impressive models.
  • Storage location: The size of the urn may also be dictated by where it will be stored – whether in a columbarium, niche, or home.

How to choose the right urn size

Determining the exact capacity of a cremation urn based on the weight of the deceased is difficult, because many factors affect the amount of ashes after cremation. However, there are some general guidelines that can help you choose the right urn

  • Factors influencing the amount of ashes:

    • Body weight: Generally speaking, the greater the body weight, the more ashes will remain after cremation.
    • Body type: People with strong bone structure will have more ashes than slim people.
    • Age: Older people tend to have less bone mass, which results in fewer ashes.
    • Coffin Type: Wooden coffins leave more ashes than cardboard coffins.

    General guidelines:

    • It is assumed that on average after cremation, approximately 3.5% of the deceased's body weight remains in the form of ashes.
    • A standard adult urn has a capacity of 3 to 3.5 liters.
    • Urns with smaller capacity are available for children and infants.

Calculating the capacity of an urn:

To estimate the required capacity of the urn, you can use the following approximate formula:

    • Capacity of the urn (in liters) = body weight of the deceased (in kg) x 0.035

    For example:

    • 70 kg person: 70 kg x 0.035 = 2.45 liters
    • 90kg person: 90kg x 0.035 = 3.15 liters

    Important notes:

    • It is always recommended to choose an urn with a slightly larger capacity than calculated to ensure that all the ashes will fit.
